Rule: Dont start coding at 12:30am

Incomplete prototype is live here: http://publicartfound.herokuapp.com

Code is here: https://github.com/rememberlenny/publicartfound

I talked with Nick today and decided to build out a graffiti game. This is a tool for encouraging people to build out the community’s content for the New Public Arts Foundation projects.

Im creating a system to encourage people to help identify the artists of the graffiti images I have. This is traditionally a tedious process that I dont want to do. I am creating a competitive platform for people who like graffiti to partake.

The game operates on a basic mechanic. Reward correct annotations, reward speed, and punish incorrect answers.

The mechanics of the game determine “correct” answers based on community’s majority.

Technically, I am leaning on existing code. I am using the Firebase service to store all my data. Im using poor jQuery and HTML for my single page web application magic. Basically, its spaghetti code. I don’t care.

I started with a basic To Do MVC project. I grabbed some Leaderboard code. And Im putting it all on a page.

Next, Ill add a randomized graffiti image. Ill also add the proper point system. Lastly, I create a chatroom, so people can talk shit.

Basic To do MVC thing:

Update: publicartfound.com

July 29, 2014 by rememberlenny

I decided to take my project to the same name as my twitter account. I think this is a good name for what I want to accomplish. I bought publicartfound.com to continue this.

Im at 357 github commits and counting.

I built out some major features today:

  • The user ‘activity feed’ is up. This is a feed that shows a users contributions on the site. For example, if they submit a post or make an addition/edit to an exiting post, they will have a record.
  • Users can also now comment. This will be a contribute function, but for now, the ability to add text on the site is important.
  • I re-added the “graffiti” or “piece” feature. I initially took out the ability to have a page on a single piece of art. I thought it was unnecessary with the focus on locations and artists. After the debacle with the “white flag” on the brooklyn bridge, I thought it was too good of a story to pass up. This feature could be used to track a press worthy piece, so people can discuss and share the various points around this.
  • I integrated a instagram feed for “location” pages. The feed is a way to showcase the types of paintings that are currently coming out of the area. The feed’s last picture is an image that goes to a follow page for the @publicartfound twitter account.

This have a long way to go in regards to style and design. This is not a problem for me. I want to get the function out of the way before I get too caught up in the details.

Post note: I wrote this 5 days ago and placed it in the Queue. I didnt realize it took so long to process. Since then, Im at 421 commits and counting.

~10% conversion rate.

These are the reports from the email newsletter. Notice the reddit traffic. I think it’s actually higher than 26%. I spent time last night and this morning doing some reddit pumping.

I posted the links to the /r/NYC subreddit. This is a good target because the group is localized and self selected. I got 12 signups in the process.

Apart from reddit, I tweeted the link to the landing page on my publicartfound twitter account.

Feedback from a friend said that the link was not very informative. This is unintentional. It reflects the lack of clarity I had when first making the newsletter.
