“Too many tweets. Please stop”

July 17, 2014 by rememberlenny

Yesterday I noticed a trend in the @publicarfound account following rating. I was getting a fluctuation of followers at the 2610 range. The numbers would go up, then down, then back up again.

Later in the day, I got an email from a follower. The email asked if I’d know how to reduce the number of posts coming out of the account. The person felt the sheer amount was overwhelming. I got another email from Gary telling me the same thing.

This morning, I noticed the follower count jumped again to 2630. Im not sure what this means. Its clear that people don’t want their feeds overwhelmed with a single type of content. I think the sheer amount of content gives me an advantage in surfacing in search results. I also think the sheer amount makes the account hard to follow. Especially if you don’t have a active news feed.

I think from this, I can do a few things:

  1. Curate the content I am putting out.
  2. Throttle the quantity of posts going out.
  3. Change the condition for retweeting content (ie. already has favorites/retweets)
  4. Create multiple accounts that specialize in various hashtags.

For now, I shut off the high traffic retweet tags. I suspect this will significantly reduce the rate of followers.

I believe the type of users I will attract by increasing the content quality will be better than the people who would consume the high quantity. This is an assumption that I need to test.

“how did you grow an audience so quickly?”

July 15, 2014 by rememberlenny

Talking about @publicartfound, there is some stuff to clear up. I have about 2600 followers on twitter. The account is posting 300-400 times a day. I started the account last week and I have almost 2000 posts. From an outsider, it looks pretty official.

Heres what I did:

About 500~ followers are real. I played the black arts and bought 2000 followers on fivrr. There was some research about how higher follower counts increase follower rate, so I tried it out.

You can read the medium article here.

After reading this, I ran a retweet experiment to gauge the traffic. The results were pretty straight forward. I wanted to know what kind of accounts were “buyable”

I blogged about the retweet experiment here.

For @publicartfound, I was getting 3-4 followers a day when I just started the account. After the follower pump, the rate increased to 15-30. I get 30-50 favorites/retweets a day.

The post frequency is based on IFTTT recipes that pull from Instagram. Its currently at an experiment stage because the quality of content is so low. Im going to do some content curation and start a recipe to pinterest. After I figure it out how to keep the quality high, Im going to create a stream images back into instagram.

The recipes are pretty simple. I wrote about it here.

Im looking to identify street art lovers with publicart.io. Everything is passive, so this technique scales.

Estimating social reach

July 7, 2014 by rememberlenny

Look at a post on the time-based newsfeed services, such as Instagram, Tumblr or Twitter. Assuming people like or comment when they are using the service, you can use your friends list to calculate the number of โ€˜activeโ€™ users at any point. Based on their activity and the time you choose to post, you can estimate who was exposed to you work. There is a deviation based on the percentage of people who lurk without โ€˜likingโ€™ and people who directly come to your site. This varies a lot, but the estimation is valuable.
