Subreddits as market research

Twitter, Facebook, Google Ads – these are all platforms many of us use to promote our product, but did you know that there is a site that you can get just as much visibility in addition to feedback on your product..at no cost? Enter Reddit – one of most trafficked websites on the entire web. I’ve been using Reddit recently to test out ideas amongst audiences that self-identify interests. HOW TO START USING REDDIT

The goal on Reddit is to get your link to be voted up. The more votes a link gets, the more likely it will appear on a subreddits homepage. The longer the link is on the subreddits homepage, the greater the social reach. For every subreddit homepage a link is on, the more likely that a user’s default homepage will also have the link.

Subreddits publicly state how many users are registered. They also say how many people are looking at content on the subreddit at any moment. This means, you can roughly estimate the social reach your link may have. For example, the /r/learnprogramming subreddit may have 600,000 subscribed users. Among these subscribed users, 500 to 5000 people may be looking at the subreddit at any moment.

When you circulate a link on Facebook or Twitter, you can only reachyour friends. Facebook’s algorithm restricts who can see posts. Twitter is also limited. Twitter posts will quickly get buried in the newest content. The exposure your content actually receives is very limited. Your reach is directly correlated to the amount of money you spend. The less money you spend, the less exposure you get. You can throttle your ad spend, by creating a daily cap, but this brings up the algorithmic issue with opaque content circulation.

The sponsored content platforms resolve this issue by creating artificially positioned posts. The posts are targeted based on the metrics offered by the social network. Twitter’s sponsored content buyers can target based on a user’s twitter followers. For example, in trying to reach tech savvy users, you can target people who follow TechCrunch or HackerNews. Facebook’s ad network operates by allowing ad buyers to target specific demographic metrics.

Reddit allows you to do this effectively for free. The posts you put up are subject to the same algorithmic chance as all other posts. There is no prefered weighting on new links. You can use the traditional methods of Reddit to gain visibility for your links. For each vote that your link gets, the higher it rises in the list ranking. By achieving a higher ranking, your link will sustain is ranking in the subreddit. The sustained ranking directly translates to quantifiable social reach. In most cases, this means real traffic driven to your site.

Compared to a sponsored post or paid ad campaign on Facebook or Twitter, the Reddit approach allows for your link to go through a natural progression. Your link will grow and die based on the communities’ genuine interest. This means that you will not prematurely end your campaign based on your campaign budget size.

TRACKING RESULTS

Reddit doesn’t have pretty data analysis tools for understanding a links social reach. You can estimate the effectiveness of your links through the subreddits public user presence numbers. As mentioned above, subreddits publicly share their subscriber and currently active user numbers. You can contrast this data against the positioning of your link, the length in which the link was visible, and the ranking that it received. If you wanted to get very detailed, you could do a study of the subreddit before launching your link and roughly estimate the lifespan of a link on the homepage.

You can combine this value with responses from Google Analytics. If you tag your link with a query parameter or ref code, you can identify the traffic generated from the Reddit links. By using ref query parameters, Google Analytics will register the traffic as a unique endpoint. This will allow you to identify the differences between campaigns you may run to the same landing page.

The Reddit algorithm increases visibility of links with early votes. To help your link gain visibility, you can coordinate upvotes by circulating your Reddit posting amongst friends. By having a few initial upvotes, your post will gain the visibility it needs to gain natural traction in any community. Without an initial push, your link will most likely go unrecognized by the greater community. The link circulation practice helps your link get out of the “New” posts page and get onto the lower part of the subreddits front page.

email newsletter promotion

I created a email newsletter for graffiti lovers in NYC. Im promoting the newsletters landing page on Twitter and Reddit. I used reddit’s /r/nyc subreddit to geotarget my audience.

Im still searching out my idea, so the newsletter is a good way to flush out my audience. I will promote this as a stand alone product and manually curate the content. I expect this to be an enjoyable process.

Per Gary’s suggestion, this isnt just a look-at-cool-stuff email. This will be a way to test out tangential ideas, such as restaurants/coffee shops to checkout in nearby places, stores worth seeing, and specific routes worth taking. If people like the process, I will keep trying new ideas.

At the time of writing this, I have 13 subscribers.

“how did you grow an audience so quickly?”

Talking about @publicartfound, there is some stuff to clear up. I have about 2600 followers on twitter. The account is posting 300-400 times a day. I started the account last week and I have almost 2000 posts. From an outsider, it looks pretty official.

Heres what I did:

About 500~ followers are real. I played the black arts and bought 2000 followers on fivrr. There was some research about how higher follower counts increase follower rate, so I tried it out.

After reading this, I ran a retweet experiment to gauge the traffic. The results were pretty straight forward. I wanted to know what kind of accounts were “buyable”

For @publicartfound, I was getting 3-4 followers a day when I just started the account. After the follower pump, the rate increased to 15-30. I get 30-50 favorites/retweets a day.

The post frequency is based on IFTTT recipes that pull from Instagram. Its currently at an experiment stage because the quality of content is so low. Im going to do some content curation and start a recipe to pinterest. After I figure it out how to keep the quality high, Im going to create a stream images back into instagram.

Im looking to identify street art lovers with publicart.io. Everything is passive, so this technique scales.

Talks about Education

I attended, MediaX

Held at Stanford university to share emerging academic research. The notes from the MediaX talks can be found here. I suggest copying the content and moving them to your favorite editor.

The openning was given by Claude Steele, a scholar of Stereotype Threat. Claude’s openning emphasized the changes in the research that come about from looking at connections between concentrations of study. He gave an example of psychology since the implementation of the MRI brain scan. Prior to image scanning, psycology was a measurement of behavior (subjective and inconsistent). MRI imaging transformed the industry by creating new opportunities to measure (quantitatively and objectively) and establishing a new language for explaining a powerful science.

Interpersonal interaction coding.

The first talk by Mark Schar analyzed productivity, creativity, and group dynamics between “divergers” and “convergers”. Divergers were described as people would questioned one another to find new answers. Convergers were oppositely seen as people who agreed with the rest of a group.

The study looked at how people collaborated, by calculating the pace at which questions were asked and new ideas were presented. The study clearly showed a distinction between two seperate groups (composed on only one type). The pace of ideas were expressed by diveregers at a rapid pace in the beginning and a bit slower in the middle. *The convergers had a slow start *to discuss ideas, then near the middle exchanged ideas and slowed down again at the end. The important point is to have both groups together when constructing teams.

The goal of the study was to understand and code interaction-dynamics between individuals working together in groups. The result was understanding that regardless of the type of people, the most important thing was to insure that no “blocks” were created during discussion. As long as no blocks existed, the group continued to look for alternaltives in approaching the situation.

Greg Kress studied how to predict long term team performance based on personalities. Study showed that all 17 factors studyed are important, but one specific point was significantly correlated with innovation and creativity. People who were extraverted in expressing their feelings created a better team dynamic and design.

Johnathan Edelman looked at how to influence media and how media influences people. ()Im not exactly sure how this was translated to the evidence below) Edelman studied two groups interaction to see how their behavior would be in a radical design process. The result showed groups that had extraverted physically expressive emotionally involved individuals were identified as the ones who would contibute more to a group. These individuals were seen to gesture more than others.

Marketing strategies

Ramesh Johari, professor in management science and engineers looked at how markets can be engineered. He looked at the variables important on influencing exchange in a online market place.

When looking at a market we ask ‘who can we trade with’, ‘wou are our competitors’ and ‘how much should we charge’. These questions are difficult to answer because of the limited amount of information provided to us in determining the answer. The rise of online market platforms change our ability to make these decisions.

Two important points of platforms are: Fine-grained matching of market participants and fine-grained collection of information about matches. In otherwords, transparency and centralization.

Market designers, like Uber, centralize the marketplace around their control. You request a ride, but don’t have a choice between who to select. Once you make a request, Uber opaquely decides who will serve you.

Oppositely, Ebay or Odesk are very decentralized and allow the use all the access to make the best decision. Still, because there are so many options, the decision is influenced by factors of search, rating, history and filtering.

Both decentralization and centralization, opacity and transparency have its benefits. Decentralization is powerful when the platform does not know what the best match for the user will be. Centralization is best in the opposite situation when the platform knows what is best for the user.

Opaque markets can also be benefitial in crowded markets. Tradiationally economics states that having more choice allows for the market to make the best decision. Instead, in a “web 3.0” world where there is too much information, it is not always obvious to know what to choose. (i.e. taobao). Having too much information and not enough can both be negative.

The big questions are how do you know how to price these market items and how much information do you need to release. A project describing this issue is looking at the pricing of mobile apps and the variables that influence the purchase of these products. When the question regarding the best marketing strategy, visibility is the most important variable in competitive atmospheres.

Academic publication meta-coding

John Willinsky and Alex Garnet talked technically about providing an effective markup structure to existing PDF journals. The focus was kill the PDA and establish a constant method for automaking the parsing and rendering of scholarly materials. The benefit of a good markup is that your document becomes your metadata. You dont need a well coded abstract, but instead the document itself contains all the content availible for understanding the contents.

Reasons: Markup is expensive when someone needs to manually markup the document. Especially for small publishers, it can be very expensive to manually tag existing documents. As a result, having a system to systematically parsing exissing content is valuable.

PDF doesnt have well-structured text mining and indexing. It also goes against current patterns of data storage, in that it does not have a way to render in different formats on mobile platforms. This prevents dyanmic content from being loaded into the documents. (Imagine having a up to date graph in your content while reading a journal)
