As a employee at a major content producer, I completely disagree.
In the last five years, Facebook has become the defacto traffic referrer. Before that, it was Google. When your company’s main identifier of success if traffic, then your traffic referrers are your clients. You do what they want you to do (read SEO and social media attribution), so you can continue gaining benefit from their network.
Without Facebook, these publications immediately lose 50%+ of their traffic. For us, that 40 million users a month. Based on ad revenue, potential subscription conversions, product upsell opportunity, and recirculation partnerships, Facebook IS giving us money.
Partnership with the social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter are to our benefit.
