I attended Startup School in New York last week. I left with the feeling that no one knows anything. There are some people who will have a lot of domain knowledge. There will be some people who have the technical skills. But when it comes down to the factor that distinguishes success and failure, no one really knows what they are doing.
I was particularly impressed by Kathryn Minshew, co-founder of The Muse. Her current success started with 148 rejections from venture capitalists in New York. She set up 150 meetings to ask for funding, but did not receive any interest. The courage and perserverence to continue forward after continuous rejection is inspiring.
Jason Shen wrote up his tweetable moments of the event.
Anytime Im looking for a restaurant or cafe, I turn to Yelp. I do this by loaing safari, typing Y-E-L, and selecting the ‘yelp.com’ autocorrected option. I do this multiple times a week. Sometimes I do this multiple times a day. I dont have the app. I decided to uninstall it for reasons I can’t remember. I haven’t needed it since.
I have been pleasantly using the service. Yelp is a web application that provides visibility into the nearby quality eaterys. I have immediate access to filters for my preferences. I can specify searches by venues that are currently open. I even have community recommendations in the form of ratings.
